Introducing Ashtanga Yoga - with Adarsh Williams
Thursdays, 9:15-10:45am
Ashtanga is a traditional style of hatha yoga which utilizes a precise system of breath and movement called vinyasa. The Ashtanga method sequences postures in 6 series of increasing difficulty that are designed to unlock the body as well as the mind. The heat generated by the practice of vinyasa and the intelligent sequencing of the series allows for progressive levels of physical and internal mastery.
The "Techniques of Ashtanga" class will provide an in depth exploration of the core techniques of the practice including breath-coordinated movement, posture, internal locks, concentration, and meditation. We will use the traditional sequencing of standing, forward and backward bending, and inverted postures to explore these core techniques. This class is open to all levels and styles of practitioners.
About the instructor: Adarsh has practiced meditation and yoga since 1995. Although initially not interested in the "physical" aspects of yoga (hoping for accidental enlightenment), he came to embrace the rigorous disciplines of yoga and martial arts. He continues to investigate a variety of traditions both ancient and contemporary and a variety of yoga styles to complement his Ashtanga practice.
Since 2001, Adarsh has practiced under the guidance of Pattabhi Jois and his family including Sharath and Saraswati. He is an authorized teacher by Sri K Pattabhi Jois and the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute.
Adarsh aims to give students a foundation in traditional yoga, which is practical and non-dogmatic. He is skilled in verbal and manual adjustments and has the ability to convey the essence of the practice whether it be grounded in the physical or subtle realms.
