Questions commonly asked by beginners:
Is Yoga a religion?
No. It is a philosophy and a science of well being and growth. However, if you are practicing a religion, Yoga may deepen your experience of it.
What if I can't touch my toes?
To begin practice, all you need is a flexible mind. With time and practice, flexibility will come.
How often should I take a class?
It's best to practice everyday. But if you can only take class twice a week, that is fine. You will never lose what you learned. Just pick up where you left off.
Do I have to be young to practice yoga?
No. Anyone, regardless of any age, can practice yoga. Of course, the practice of a 20-year-old is different from that of a 50-year-old. Through time and sensitivity, you will develop a practice that is right for you.
What is the difference between the classes?
In yoga, there are many different styles and teachers. Hatha yoga has branched off into many main styles such as Iyengar, Astanga and Anusara. If you are new to the practice, try different classes not only for the style but for the teachers. Finding your teacher is about finding the style you like with the personality that makes you feel comfortable and happy. For more information, go to our "yoga styles" page.
What is Yoga?
The Sanskrit word "yoga" means "union." Developed in India 5,000 years ago, yoga is a healing experience for the mind and the body. While there are many styles, Hatha yoga -- the yoga of effort -- is a physical discipline that focuses on postures, or asanas. By working with asanas and conscious breathing, body and mind are joined in a balanced union, or "yoga." Astanga, Iyengar, Vinyasa and Flow are all forms of Hatha yoga. While styles of practice vary widely, the goal is the same -- to create a healthy body, peaceful mind and compassionate spirit.
How much do classes cost? How do I pay?
You can pay online or at the front desk using cash, check, account credit or credit card. We accept MasterCard and Visa but not American Express. For a list of prices, go to “prices” in the lefthand navigation bar.
What should I wear and what do I bring?
Comfortable workout clothes are fine (shorts, sweat pants, tank tops, T-shirts, etc.). We practice yoga barefoot, so leave shoes and socks in the cubby holes in the studio and don't wear tights that have feet attached to them. We have a changing room but no lockers or showers. We provide all props -- such as mats, blocks, blankets, straps and bolsters -- that you will need for class as well as clean towels. You can also purchase your own props from our boutique. There are cubby holes for your other belongings inside the studio.
