About Pranayama
As stated by Patanjali in the Yoga sutras, Pranayama is the fourth limb of Ashtanga Yoga that teaches how to breathe. Prana is the life force energy that we take in and give back with every single complete breath. Through various pranayama practices, we will explore the subtleties of the physical aspect of breathing and learn how to control, prolong, restrain, sustain, and suspend breath. Most important in your asana and meditation practices, these techniques will help you expand the volume of your lungs and use the breath efficiently, which is a major tool to calm and quiet the mind.
About the instructor: Birgit teaches yoga in the lineage of Iyengar and Thomas. She studied with Ben Thomas for more than five years and was qualified and certified to teach level I and II Asanas and Pranayamas by Ben, a senior yoga teacher who has studied with the Iyengar for more than 35 years. Birgit has also studied medical Qi Gong and Tai Chi (Chen style) with Dr. Arnold Tayam.
Combining yogasanas, pranayama, chanting, meditation, and philosophy, Birgit’s teachings are well balanced and emphasize physical alignment and precision, an open mind, and a humble heart. She also brings in her long-time experience in Soto Zen and Shotokan Karate, which she has been practicing for more than 30 years.
Birgit teaches weekly yoga classes at Yoga of Los Altos and at the California Yoga Center in Mountain View. In addition, she holds private yoga and pranayama workshops and classes, and hosts a monthly meditation circle at her home in Los Altos.
