Styles of Hatha Yoga come in many variations with the same basic 'seed-postures' as a common link. Differences arise from variations on breath, sequence, motion, alignment and overall form. At Devi Yoga classes offer many different types of Hatha Yoga with the overall emphasis of integrating a serene mind, harmonious Spirit and powerfully healthy body.
Typical classes are 75 to 90 minutes, with the exception of the Lunch Series Yoga classes, which are 60 minutes. For up-to-date class details, please click on 'online schedule.'
Ashtanga
Ashtanga is a traditional style of hatha yoga which utilizes a precise system of breath and movement called vinyasa. The Ashtanga method sequences postures in 6 series of increasing difficulty that are designed to unlock the body as well as the mind. The heat generated by the practice of vinyasa and the intelligent sequencing of the series allows for progressive levels of physical and internal mastery.
The "Techniques of Ashtanga" class will provide an in depth exploration of the core techniques of the practice including breath-coordinated movement, posture, internal locks, concentration, and meditation. We will use the traditional sequencing of standing, forward and backward bending, and inverted postures to explore these core techniques. This class is open to all levels and styles of practitioners.
Bikram Yoga
A Bikram style yoga class is conducted in an intentionally warmer room temperature setting , and comprises a 26 pose series, with each posture repeated twice. The 26 postures go through the whole body to balance, strengthen, reshape, and rejuvenate various glands and muscles to improve circulation, digestion and willpower. This hot yoga class will assist you in letting go of stress and managing a healthy weight. Click here for more information on our Bikram classes.
Vinyasa
These classes are a popular, evolving form of traditional Hatha yoga that focuses on integrating breath and movement, flowing from one posture to the next, with some held postures. By attending Vinyasa classes, students will develop stamina and flexibilty from practicing the series of poses that range from slow flowing to fast aerobic.
Iyengar
B.K.S. Iyengar is a Hatha Yogi whose Yoga practice spans more than 73 years and who continues, at the age of 90, to practice daily.
Iyengar has introduced the use of props to Yoga, so that everyone might be able to practice it with ease. He points out, however, that one should not depend on those props and that they are just a means to experience the poses.
Balance, alignment, and symmetry are the basics of the asana, pranayama, and meditation practice. Alignment and symmetry bring balance; balance creates sensitivity and freedom for the body-mind-breath awareness. The foundations of the Iyengar style are the learning, understanding, and timing of the asana sequencing, all underlined by the philosophy of the Yoga Sutras as defined thousands of years ago by Patanjali.
Yoga Tune Up
Yoga Tune Up® is a format that accelerates and increases the healing benefits of Yoga by combining elements of yoga, calisthenics, body therapy, and stress reduction. The poses, sequences & routines found in Yoga Tune Up very quickly identify and strengthen ‘body blind spots’ - which are areas of the body that tend to get overused or underused and are typically the catalyst for pain and injury. Yoga Tune Up approaches the body as a living archaeological dig, probing layers of muscle, tendons, connective tissues and joints, ultimately excavating unhealthy tension patterns until we move back into complete physiological balance.
Restorative Yoga
This calming, therapeutic class uses props to support the body in order to deepen the benefits of poses. Both soothing and nurturing, this class promotes the effects of conscious relaxation. An opportunity to be still, relax, and let go!
Yin and Vinyasa
In this class, we explore two different approaches to movement, aligned with the dual qualities in nature that Taoists describe as yin and yang. In the yang phase of class, we engage in soft vinyasa to bring more prana and qi (vital energy that is mobilized by the breath) into the lungs, muscles, and skin. During the yin, we place more emphasis on mindful meditation while holding passive stretches for longer periods of time. More energy is pooled into deeper layers of the body, resulting in greater flexibility and ease, while the mind experiences greater clarity as it is trained up through this active meditation. Just as yin and yang create balance and order in nature, practicing with these concepts in mind can bring our lives into balance as well.
Jivamukti Yoga
Jivamukti Yoga is a is a vigorously physical and intellectually stimulating practice leading to spiritual awareness. Jivamukti is a challenging form of yoga taught in a vinyasa style. Each class focuses on a theme, which is supported by Sanskrit chanting, readings, references to scriptural texts, a blend of yogic and modern music (from the Beatles to hip hop), spoken word, asana sequencing and yogic breathing practices. Classes are based on five key tenets which include ancient and modern scripture such as the Bhagavad Gita and Ghandi; bhakti (devotion); ahimsa (non-harming); uplifting music; and the tranquility of meditation. One of the nine internationally recognized forms of yoga, the name Jivamukti (pronounced Jee-va-mook-tee), is taken from the Sanskrit word jivan ~ individual soul / and mukti ~ meaning liberation while still living in the body. The goal of the practice is to help students attain their fullest potential in every sense - physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional.
